Rolling Fire Door Replacement: How to Match the Existing Opening

Replacing a rolling fire door means matching the fire rating, the opening size, and the operating hardware of the old door. The new door must be a certified assembly for the same opening, and the certificate has to cover the exact width, height, and motor. This guide covers what to check before ordering a replacement so the install goes smoothly.

Start with the existing opening

Measure the clear opening width and height, the headroom, and the side space. The headroom matters because the new barrel must fit above the opening, and a thicker fire rated curtain needs more space than a standard shutter. Check the wall type and the mounting points, because the brackets carry the full weight of the rolled door.

Match the fire rating

The replacement must meet the same fire rating as the opening requires, usually 60, 90, or 180 minutes. The old door’s label may show the rating, but confirm it against the building plan or the fire marshal. If the building code changed since the original install, the required rating may have changed too.

Check the operator and controls

If the old door was motorized, note the voltage, the control type, and the cycle pattern. The new motor must be part of the certified assembly and sized for the door weight and duty. Fire doors often need a release mechanism that lets the curtain drop automatically in a fire, so confirm that the replacement includes the tested release.

What the supplier needs

Send the opening size, the required rating, the headroom, the wall type, whether the door is motorized, and the number of cycles per day. Ask for the certificate that names the exact model and opening size before ordering. A replacement door with a certificate for a different width will not pass inspection.
