Apartment buildings need fire doors that keep smoke and fire from moving between units and through stairwells. What rating apartments need
The required fire resistance time depends on the building type and the location of the door. Corridor doors in multi-family buildings commonly need 20 to 60 minutes, while stairwell doors and unit entry doors can require 60 or 90 minutes. The local code sets the number, so confirm it with the architect or the fire marshal before ordering.
Why steel is the default
Steel fire doors resist impact, stay flat, and are available in larger tested sizes than wood. They also accept the locks and closers that apartment buildings need without losing the rating. Wood fire doors are used when the interior design calls for them, but the whole wood assembly must pass the same test.
Hardware is part of the rating
The closer and hinges are part of the certified assembly, and so is the smoke seal. Changing the closer or using a non-rated lock can void the door’s rating. For apartment doors, request the hardware package that matches the test report, including the lever handle, the closer, and the smoke seal for the frame.
Sound and security extras
A steel fire door can also help with sound between units when the frame and seals are properly fitted. If security is a concern, choose a lock set that is compatible with the fire rating and add a door viewer or access control approved for rated doors. Confirm these extras with the supplier so the assembly stays certified.
